The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a warning about certain hot dogs sold at some of the country’s big-name grocery stores.

Certain Zabiha Halal brand and Maple Lodge Farms brand Chicken Wiener products are being recalled due to an undeclared pea protein, the CFIA said.

The affected products are being recalled from the marketplace because they contain pea protein which is not declared on the label, the food recall warning states, adding the recalled products have been sold nationally.

“Do not consume recalled products to which you are allergic or sensitive,” the CFIA said.

Check to see if you have the recalled products, the CFIA added, as they may cause a “serious or life-threatening reaction” to those with the identified allergy.

“Do not serve, use, sell or distribute recalled products,” the CFIA said. “Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Sobeys spokesperson Tshani Jaja said the recall impacts Ontario, West and Atlantic Foodland, FreshCo, Thrifty Foods, IGA, Safeway and Sobeys stores and the company’s online grocery home delivery service, Voilà by Sobeys.

“All products pertaining to this recall have been removed from store shelves in the region,” Jaja said. “We continue to diligently follow all recall notices and remove any affected product in a timely manner to ensure all products on our shelves are safe to consume.

Walmart spokesperson Felicia Fefer said Walmart Canada did carry the products.

“At Walmart Canada, food safety is a top priority,” she said. “Per the recall, they have been removed from sale.”

Metro spokesperson Stephanie Bonk said the impacted Maple Lodge Farms and Zabiha Halal products sold at Metro and Food Basics stores have been recalled.

Loblaw Companies Ltd., which owns No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore and other grocery stores, has neither confirmed nor denied it carries the recalled products

The recall was triggered by a consumer complaint and there has been one reported reaction associated with the consumption of these products, the CFIA said.
